Celexa is a drug used to treat depression. It is a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, also called SSRIs.

This drug's action is to increase the amount of serotonin in the brain. This natural chemical normally contributes to a feeling of well-being. In addition, serotonin naturally plays a role in regulating the bowel movements and sleep patterns. Celexa helps serotonin stay active in the brain.

This drug has side effects of sleep and mood disturbances and gastrointestinal effects, according to Drugs.com.

Foods that also have this side effect should be avoided. Diet and nutrition should be discussed with your health-care provider before starting this drug.

Foods With Caffeine

Foods that stimulate the central nervous system should be avoided when taking Celexa. Stimulants such as caffeine are found in coffee products, chocolate and dessert varieties. Sleep disturbances and insomnia are side effects of Celexa. These can be further defined as having trouble falling asleep and waking up during the night. Having a nighttime dessert with chocolate in it may exacerbate the side effects of Celexa because a stimulant was consumed. However, to determine if Celexa is the cause of sleep disturbances, avoid caffeine products.

Foods With Alcohol

Alcohol depresses the central nervous system. Avoid products with alcohol when you are taking Celexa. Side effects of Celexa include drowsiness, dizziness with position changes and blurred vision. These are also the potential side effects of alcohol consumption without being on an SSRI.

The central nervous system will have compounded depressant effects with both Celexa and alcohol.

Be aware of desserts with alcohol such as tiramisu, Kahlua desserts and rum cake. In addition, spare rib recipes may call for alcohol in the basting sauces and marinades.

Foods Upsetting to the Gastrointestinal System

Foods that upset the gastrointestinal tract may enhance this side effect of Celexa. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea are considered serious side effects of Celexa, according to Drugs.com. Avoid foods that are not bland when you are taking Celexa.

Spicy diets will upset the stomach lining that may result in nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. These dishes include hot pepper varieties, hot wings, chili, Cajun dishes and pizza.
