First Symptoms of a Second Pregnancy

Every pregnancy is different from the next. The symptoms a woman experiences may be exactly the same in the second pregnancy as they were in the first. Some women may notice symptoms earlier in the pregnancy or they may be later. It is not uncommon for some signs of pregnancy to be more or less intense than they were the first time around. Most of the possible early symptoms of pregnancy are the same whether this is the first or second pregnancy for the woman, except the baby bump. It is very likely that a woman will start showing sooner during a subsequent pregnancy.

Breast Changes

Breast changes are typically one of the earliest symptoms of pregnancy. The Mayo Clinic explains that, as early as two weeks after conception, the hormone changes a pregnant woman's body experiences can cause:

  • breast tenderness
  • tingling
  • soreness
  • even fullness

The areolas, or the skin directly circling the nipple, may become darker in color as well.

The high levels of progesterone can cause a woman to feel tired very early in the pregnancy, explains the American Pregnancy Association. This can occur as early as one week after conception.

Spotting

This can cause some mild cramping and spotting. Some women will misattribute these symptoms to an impending period but the bleeding will be considerably lighter and won't last very long.

Morning sickness, or nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, can show up as early as two weeks after conception, says the American Pregnancy Association. It is not uncommon for a woman to report having more severe morning sickness with one pregnancy and not the other. The reason for this is not fully understood.

Headaches

Shortly after conception the hormone levels begin changing in a pregnant woman's body. This can lead to sudden headaches that do not seem to be attributed to anything else. Some women report having the headaches at the same time each day.

Weight Gain

It is not unusual for a woman to go the first several weeks of pregnancy without gaining any weight. She may notice that her midsection becomes a little thicker and that clothes are not fitting her properly. In her second pregnancy, she will experience this weight gain or thickening earlier than in the past. This is due to the muscles in the abdomen having been previously stretched. It is much easier for the muscles to relax once the pregnancy begins.
