When it comes to morning sickness, research actually says the queasiness bodes well for baby. That's of little comfort when you're bent over the toilet bowl with the heaves, though. The bad news? Up to 90 percent of expectant mothers experience nausea at some point during pregnancy. The good news? For the vast majority of expectant mommies, the symptoms taper off not long after the first trimester ends.

So while you're waiting to reach that milestone, and even at those times when eating is the last thing you want to do, here are a few foods you can try to get into your stomach that can help stave off the worst of the symptoms.

Bland, carb-rich pantry staples like dry toast, crackers and pretzels are classic remedies for a reason. For one, they lack any real odor, which can be a godsend to someone suffering from a seriously sensitive sense of smell. The starches also calm stomach acids in your digestive tract and get metabolized quickly, which lowers the volume on the nausea.

Pack in Some Protein

Proteins are great for staving off nausea, but for many mommies-to-be, even the mention of raw meat or fresh seafood is enough to cue the hurls. Instead, try a smear of peanut butter or a slice of cheese on a cracker. Proteins are harder to digest and move more slowly through your body than carbs, which means you feel full (and not queasy!) a little bit longer.

Long sessions hovering in the bathroom often result in dehydration and low blood pressure, both of which (in turn) make the nausea even worse. Break the cycle by drinking plenty of water, as often as you can—doctors recommend at least 10 eight-ounce glasses a day. If the thought of a couple if sips makes you want to gag, go for a more belly-friendly carbonated alternative like ginger ale. Cold can be soothing, too, so also try munching on ice, a cold piece of watermelon or a freezer pop.

Pucker Up

It doesn't matter if you smell, drink or taste them; lemons are packed with potent vitamins and a strong, cleansing flavor that does wonders to calm a morning-sick belly. A tall, icy glass of lemonade is refreshing, even in the dead of winter. Or try sucking on a piece of lemon candy. If it's a particularly nausea-inducing odor that's causing you problems, you may find that even a sniff of the fresh fruit is enough to calm the worst of it.

Keep in mind that every pregnant belly is different, and what helps you at 9 a.m. might send you into projectile paroxysms at 9 p.m. Try different remedies at different times of the day.
